Every autumn, Munich transforms into a lively hub of music, beer, and Bavarian tradition as Oktoberfest takes over the city. As the world’s largest folk festival, Oktoberfest runs annually from late September to the first weekend of October, attracting millions of visitors from around the globe. 

While the famous beer tents are the main attraction, there’s so much more to see, do, and taste during this iconic festival. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or planning a weekend getaway, here’s my JAYScapades guide on the best things to do in Munich during Oktoberfest.

1. Experience the Festive Beer Tents

No Oktoberfest visit is ever complete without stepping inside one of the celebrated beer tents. Each tent has its own personality: from the lively, party-focused Hofbräu-Festzelt to the more traditional Augustiner-Festhalle. I recommend reserving a table for evenings and weekends or arrive early during the day to secure a seat.

2. Dress up in Traditional Bavarian Clothing

This is what I came for! Wearing traditional Bavarian clothing is part of the fun. Men typically wear Lederhosen, while women wear Dirndls. You can buy authentic outfits in Munich or rent them if you’re only planning to wear them once. Dressing up makes the experience feel even more festive and helps you blend in with the locals.

3. Enjoy the Rides and Carnival Attractions

Oktoberfest isn’t just about beer, it’s also a giant amusement park. Thrill-seekers can enjoy roller coasters, Ferris wheels, haunted houses, and traditional Bavarian rides. It’s a fun way to tap into your inner child while exploring the festival grounds.
