Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands and such a great place to explore if you’re in the country. I’ve been here three times now, but it wasn’t until my most recent trip that I really got to dive into everything this city has to offer. I just love coming back—it’s such a charming and friendly place.
Like with any new city, figuring out the best things to do can be a bit overwhelming, so I thought I’d share some of my favourite spots and experiences from my past visits. Hopefully, this helps you plan an amazing trip. Enjoy Rotterdam!
1. Channel your inner main character in Delfshaven

Stepping into this neighbourhood is like traveling back in time to a more historic, charming version of the city. Unlike the modern vibes of much of Rotterdam, Delfshaven is one of the rare spots that escaped the devastation of World War II. It’s super simple to hop on a tram and make your way here from anywhere in Rotterdam. Getting around the city is easy, so you won’t have any trouble finding it.

2. Eat and leave no crumbs at Markthal Rotterdam

The Markthal is one of Rotterdam’s newer gems, and honestly, it’s a must-visit if you’re into striking architecture and amazing food. But I’ll be honest, it’s not just about the food here. The ceiling is stunning and it’s home to “Horn of Plenty,” the largest artwork in the Netherlands. This massive, five-layered piece is seriously mesmerising and adds so much to the vibe of the place while munching on some classic Dutch stroopwafels.

3. Enjoy a lovely walk along the Old Harbour and Marine Museums

If you’re up for a little maritime vibe, you’ve got to check out the Old Harbor (Oude Haven). It’s a cool spot with beautifully restored boats, lovely walkways, and tons of great places to eat and drink. It’s a great way to dive into the area’s history, learn about the city’s connection to the sea, and just soak in some local culture.
4. Ease your mind under the Erasmus Bridge

Stretching across the Nieuwe Maas of the Rhine, this is actually the second-largest bridge in the Netherlands. if you need some time to breath and recharge after exploring the city, the view of the bridge by the riverside is ideal for you fellow introverts!
5. Enjoy the view from the Euromast Tower

If you want jaw-dropping views of Rotterdam and some Instagram-worthy shots, head straight to the top of the Euromast Tower. Pro tip: book those tickets ahead of time unless you enjoy waiting in line and questioning your life choices! At a towering 185 meters, it’s the tallest building in Rotterdam. Once you’re up there, you’ll get to soak in the panoramic views while picking up some fun facts about Rotterdam’s history.
6. Spot the Cube Houses (Kijk-Kubus)

The Cube Houses (Kijk-Kubus) are hands-down one of the most iconic spots in Rotterdam. Designed by Piet Blom, they’re completely unique and unlike anything else you’ll see in the Netherlands. If you’re curious about what it’s like inside, you can visit the “Kijk-Kubus” (aka the Show Cube). It’s a fully furnished house open for visitors, and tickets are just a few euros.
7. Experience Fenix Food Factory

To my fellow foodies out there, no trip to Rotterdam is complete without hitting up a few spots to eat and drink. This place is packed with stalls serving everything from local cheese boards to BBQ and cakes, so if you’re even slightly hungry, you’re in the right place. If the weather permits, I recommend eating outdoors which gives you a relaxing view of the river.

Built way back between 1149 and 1525, the bronze doors, stunning interiors, and gorgeous stained glass are seriously impressive. If you’re into history, this place should be high on your list when you’re in Rotterdam. The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk is pretty much one of the only medieval buildings still standing in Rotterdam, so it’s definitely worth a visit. 🙂
