My JAYScapades Guide: Top 7 Things to do in Geneva

The city of Geneva is one of Switzerland’s best cities to explore. It has this unique charm that makes it so much fun to discover, especially with all the incredible things to do dotted throughout the city.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t really expecting so much from the city since I only planned it as my side trip from Lyon. Thankfully, Geneva is vibrant, welcoming, and full of surprises, it truly exceeded every expectation I had.

Geneva is amazing! That’s why I’m excited to share some of the best things to do in Geneva that I’ve discovered during my recent trip. Whether you’re an adventurous introvert, a history buff, a nature lover, or just looking for a relaxed getaway, there’s something here for everyone that I’m sure you will also love!

1. Be in awe at the sight of Jet D’ Eau

The Jet d’Eau is a must-see landmark and one of the best things to do in Geneva. Towering 140 meters above Lake Geneva, this iconic fountain is hard to miss. It was originally designed in the 19th century as a safety valve for a hydraulic plant, it became so beloved that it was moved closer to the city to be enjoyed by all. Take a stroll along the stone pier for an up-close view, but beware—if the wind shifts, you might get a refreshing shower!

2. Take a Sweet Escape with Geneva’s Choco Pass

As someone with a sweet tooth, this is probably my most favourite activity in the city! Imagine exploring the charming Old Town while discovering the craft of local chocolatiers. It is a dream!

For only 30 CHF (27GBP), the Choco Pass grants you access to tasting plates at partner chocolate shops, allowing you to savour a variety of unique and delicious flavours while walking around the Old town. A portion of the fee also gets donated for climate protection and sustainable tourism in Switzerland.

3. Romanticise your life at The Carouge

Also known as “Little Italy” by locals, Carouge stands out for its Sardinian-inspired architecture and relaxed vibe. Perfect for a romantic walk through its historic streets, filled with cozy cafes, artisan boutiques, and antique shops or if you’re on your own, this is an ideal place for getting lost in your own thoughts.

4. Unleash your inner Science Geek at the CERN

Personally, one of the main reasons why I love to travel is the opportunity for learning and discovering new things. European Organization for Nuclear Research is a hub of scientific discovery and innovation in Geneva. Famous as the home of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle accelerator, CERN is where scientists explore the fundamental mysteries of the universe. Doesn’t it sound amazing?

Visitors can dig into cutting-edge physics through guided tours, interactive exhibits at the Globe of Science and Innovation, and fascinating displays about groundbreaking discoveries. A must-visit for science enthusiasts.

5. Experience Luxury and History at Patek Philippe Museum

Since Geneva is the capital of Swiss watchmaking, no trip will ever be complete without learning about its history. The Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva houses one of the world’s most important and prestigious horological collections. It takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring the 500-year history of watchmaking.

6.Raise your flag at Palais Des Nations

If only I could literally raise the flag and walk the runway, I would! Kidding aside, the Palace of Nations, built in the 1920s for the League of Nations, is now the European headquarters of the United Nations. Join a guided tour to see the Assembly Hall and Council Chamber, as well as other notable spaces. After your visit, you can also explore nearby attractions like the Musée Ariana or the serene Botanic Gardens.

7. Say a little prayer at Cathedrale Saint-Pierre

The Cathedral Saint-Pierre is located in the heart of Geneva’s Old Town. Admire the intricate ceilings of the Maccabees Chapel and see the chair of John Calvin. You can also climb the spire for breathtaking panoramic views of Geneva. Entry to the cathedral is free, but there’s a small fee for the climb—it’s worth it! And most importantly, don’t forget to say a little prayer or make a wish! 🙂
